This is boggling my mind. I don’t even see how this game could warrant a score in the 7s or 8s. My review about this travesty of a game will eventually be coming, but I’m still floored at how this could pass as releasable.
Note: I’m playing the Xbox 360 Version of the game. Interesting enough that version was also uploaded to Steam, since they accidentally released the Developer Version to PC Players.
Here’s a quick rundown:
- Save System is broken in a context (You only have Auto-Save available to you, which you should be able to see where this could go horribly wrong.)
- Character control is horrid. You feel like you’re drunk 24/7, and that you can’t trust that pushing forward will have you actually walk forward.
- Hitbox detection for melee is a guessing game. You’ll hit when you clearly missed, and you’ll miss when you clearly hit.
- Graphics are glitching out a majority of the time. Try looking inside a window to a “house” you just went in, only to see no beds, furniture, or anything at all. The entire inside of the home’s graphic was ripped out.
- Walked out into the water thinking I would hit an invisible wall. “Leaving Playable Area” popped up on the screen, and then I got teleported back to land.
- All of the zombies seem to have a scripted spawn area. They ALWAYS spawn in the same spots, everytime. Given enough time, the zombies you ran over in your truck, or you killed earlier on a bench will respawn in that EXACT SAME SPOT.
- Be careful about leaving the path they built for you, because you could end up stuck and can’t get out. I got stuck behind a billboard in the first 5 minutes of playing, because I was taking a shortcut down the cliff. Had to eventually reload to the Auto-Save that was 4 minutes back, because I couldn’t get out. Too bad the Auto-Save saved while I was stuck, so I had to completely start a new character. Haha, awesome…
I could go into it more, but I’ll save it for the review. I can’t wait to test out Co-op with a few friends, since I’ve been hearing that you get Console Lock-Ups, Corrupted Saves, and constant Disconnects. So, back to the point at hand; How is Dead Island receiving all of these 7-9s from Reviewers? Look at the Average Score on Game Rankings.
